The Barra Track follows the Waingawa River to Mitre Flats and Mitre Flats Hut in the Tararua Forest Park, making a perfect overnight tramp for the family

The Barra Track to Mitre Flats takes about four hours each way, making an excellent first, slightly more challenging overnight family tramp, starting just 15 minutes from Masterton.
See wonderful bush streams and waterfalls that are easily crossed with a bit of rock hopping, and glimpses of stunning peaks above the bush line.
Hut tickets are required to stay overnight, and you can get them from the Masterton or Martinborough isite Visitor Information Centre.
Location
To get to the track, turn off State Highway 2, Masterton into Upper Plain Road, then into Upper Waingawa Road to the Pines carpark where the Barra Track begins.
