The Mt Holdsworth Jumbo Circuit is a two-to-three-day tramp through some of the best alpine tops in the Tararua Forest Park, with stunning views.
About
Reach the open tops of the Tararua Range within a few hours walk from the Mount Holdsworth road end, tramping to Powell Hut, onto Mt Holdsworth, then Jumbo Hut, returning to the road end via the Atiwhakatu track. It’s well worth the effort, as you will be rewarded with 360-degree views of the Wairarapa and greater Wellington region.
The bush tracks are all well marked, streams are bridged, open tops are marked with blue poles, and junctions are signposted.
Hut tickets are required to stay overnight, and you can get them at the Masterton or Martinborough isite Visitor Information Centre.
Location
The trail starts from the entrance to Tararua Forest Park on Mount Holdsworth Road. To get there, turn off State Highway 2 into Norfolk Road and follow the signs to Tararua Forest Park.
