Tararua Forest Park
The Tararua Forest Park provides an outstanding tramping, hunting and walking opportunities in a wild, natural landscape. At 116,535 hectares it is the largest conservation park managed by the Department of Conservation in the North Island.
About
Take your pick of fabulous walking tracks ranging from easy day trips for the whole family to overnight tramps that reach the summit of Mount Holdsworth.
The Donnelly Flat Loop Track, the Gentle Annie Loop that climbs past the Rocky Lookout and the Waiohine Gorge are all great for families and kids.
Totara Flats at the confluence of the Waiohine River and Totara Creek, and Mitre Flats on the Barra Track both make an excellent first tramp for families.
Powell Hut at 1,200 metres and Mount Holdsworth at 1,470 are the steepest, providing a real sense of achievement and stunning photo opportunities.
Mount Holdsworth Jumbo Circuit is the most challenging with a two-to-three-day tramp climbing through beech-podocarp forest to some of the best alpine tops in the Tararua Forest Park.
Hut tickets are required to stay overnight, and you can get them from the Masterton or Martinborough isite Visitor Information Centre.
