Vineyard day-trip from Wellington by train

Cycle the vines in Martinborough

Indulge in a day of wine-tasting in pretty Martinborough - no car required. Perfect!

Catch the mid-morning train from Wellington, hop off in Featherston and straight onto the Featherston to Martinborough bus, which will whisk you to the village in time for vineyard opening hours. The bus meets every train except the late train on Friday - check the train timetable from Wellington here (due to upgrade work all off peak trains during the week are replaced by bus, and some weekend services. Check the timetable here).

Another option is to book a shuttle with Rimutaka ShuttlesCarterton Shuttles or Claremont Cabs.

Once you're in Martinborough, hire a bike and pick up a wine map at the i-SITE Visitor Centre - or download a map right now and start plotting your route. Spend the afternoon peddling around Martinborough's vineyards - take a look at Green Jersey Cycle Tours guided (and un-guided) day rides around Martinborough vineyards.

Enjoy a tasting platter among the vines, or a late lunch at a Martinborough Cafe.

A spot of shopping's a must before you head home. There's everything from homewares to award-winning olive oil and NZ designer clothes here.

Back on the bus or shuttle to meet the train. You'll be back in Welly in time for dinner (if you need it!)

Prefer a guided tour?
Martinborough Wine Tours offer a full or half day tour and can collect you from the train station in Featherston. Or if you prefer a small group tour Martinborough Gourmet Wine Tour takes in four Martinborough vineyards and includes lunch.
