The Wairarapa has quiet country roads, town parks and bike trails for keen cyclists of all ages.

A must-do is the spectacular Rimutaka Cycle Trail. It's a 'Great Ride' on Nga Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail - which means it's one of the country's best!

There are plenty of options for bike hire in the Wairarapa and plenty of cycling trails. Head to Martinborough, pick up a wine trail map from the i-SITE Visitor Centre and pedal at your own pace around the vineyards

You can also bring your bike on the train from Wellington - a great way to get here and see the coutryside along the way. Take your bike up to the front of the train, let a Tranzmetro staff member know you're there and provided there's enough space in the luggage compartment you're away! 

Looking for family-friendly mountain-biking? There are dedicated trails near Martinborough (see the Tora Tora Park, below) and in Carterton.

The Wairarapa has the best road cycling in the country. Join in a local bunch ride, go on your own or bring your own bunch for a ride on these recommended circuits.

Tora Tora is a private mountain bike trail park designed and built by one of New Zealand’s trail experts, Graeme Morgan. Just 30 minutes from the wine village of Martinborough and 90 minutes from Wellington, it offers more than 25km of exhilarating trails for all riding levels.
The Greytown Trail is a 5km route used as a walking track and cycle trail connecting Greytown to Woodside Station. The fully fenced trail has a slight incline to the station, with views of paddocks, Tararua mountains and stands of oak trees.
Rimutaka Shuttles provide walkers and cyclists transport along the Rimutaka Cycle Trail, including Featherston, Cross Creek, Martinborough, Kaitoke and Wellington. Catch the train to the Wairarapa and arrange a pick up.
Martinborough Wine Merchants is a one-stop specialist wine shop - and they hire bikes for cycling round the vines, too.
The Rimutaka Rail Trail is a gently graded 18 km walk or mountain bike ride over the spectacular Rimutaka Ranges. It is part of the longer Rimutaka Cycle Trail, which links up with Wellington.
Discover Opaki vineyards, groves and orchards by bike! Hire a bike, grab a map and head off on a self-guided cycle tour of the tastes of Opaki.
Friendly RotoCycle cycle hire in Masterton offers adults and children's bikes for as little as 2 hours hire - or up to a whole day. You'll find them at the mini golf kiosk at popular Queen Elizabeth Park. There's no better place to start exploring Masterton's range of cycle trails and river tracks.

With an e-bikes it’s easy to explore much more of the Wairarapa or the Rimutaka Cycle Trail. For example you could ride from Martinborough to Cape Palliser! If a group wants to go cycling but some in the group aren't sure they'll keep up, these bikes are the answer!
