The Wairarapa has quiet country roads, town parks and bike trails for keen cyclists of all ages.
A must-do is the spectacular Rimutaka Cycle Trail. It's a 'Great Ride' on Nga Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail - which means it's one of the country's best!
There are plenty of options for bike hire in the Wairarapa and plenty of cycling trails. Head to Martinborough, pick up a wine trail map from the i-SITE Visitor Centre and pedal at your own pace around the vineyards.
You can also bring your bike on the train from Wellington - a great way to get here and see the coutryside along the way. Take your bike up to the front of the train, let a Tranzmetro staff member know you're there and provided there's enough space in the luggage compartment you're away!
If road cycling's your thing, Route 52 is a treat. This gently rolling road connects Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa and takes 2-3 days one way. You can also hook into this route if you're coming from Manawatu.
Looking for family-friendly mountain-biking? There are dedicated trails near Martinborough (see the Tora Tora Park, below) and in Carterton.
